Co-ops are membership organisations set up to meet the needs of their members, and an active, diverse and engaged membership is crucial for any co-operative to effective.

Course content

During this workshop, participants will:

  • Explore what we mean by engaged members and why they are important to co-operatives 
  • Identify what their organisation is currently doing to support member engagement and how members can participate 
  • Collectively explore how they can support membership to be representative of local communities and be meaningful for all 

Additional/alternative learning outcomes for focus on young people: 

  • Consider what co-ops around the world are doing to support youth membership 
  • Identify and discuss the challenges and solutions to increasing youth member engagement   
  • Identify actionable ideas in their role to support youth membership 

Length of course

This workshop can be delivered as a half-day course, lasting three hours, or extended to a full-day course, lasting six hours
