Who is it for?

This workshop is aimed at council members who want to boost their skills at delivering chamber speeches.

What will participants learn?

This workshop will show learners how to deliver chamber speeches that will engage the whole audiences: from fellow members in the chamber to members of the general public watching debates on their smartphones. The course not only imparts a strong, memorable preparation formula, it also equips delegates with practical, camera-friendly tips that they can use on their feet.

By the end of the workshop, participants will know how to:

  • Understand the needs of their wide-reaching and wide-ranging audience
  • Get to the point quickly
  • Structure a motion and an amendment
  • Speak in clear, grammatically-correct English
  • Use a microphone correctly
  • Stress words effectively
  • Talk to their audience, not to their notes
  • Manage their bodies so their gestures complement the vocal message
  • Create a polished image
  • Dress for the camera
  • Behave appropriately when they’re not speaking but still in shot

How will participants learn?

During the workshop they’ll learn by taking part in:

  • Whole and sub-group discussion with practical activities
  • Q&A sessions
  • Self-reflection activities to think about how you’ll apply what you’ve learned to a wider context
