About Julie

Julie is a Labour and Co-operative Party Member of the European Parliament representing the North West of England. She was first elected in 2014, having won a seat back from the far-right Leader of the British National Party. She is a life-long co-operator and ran an arts organisation in the North East of England for many years before entering politics. 

Julie serves on the Parliament’s Culture & Education Committee where she was responsible for the Report on Intercultural Dialogue, Diversity and Education for Fundamental Values in 2015/16. She is also a member of the Regional Development Committee and Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. In her first mandate she served on the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee where she was a very active on equal rights.

Julie has been an anti-racist campaign all of her life. She is the President of Greater Manchester Stand Up To Racism. At a European level she works closely with the European Grassroots Anti-Racist Movement where she co-founded the Elie Wiesel Network of parliamentarians who pledge to raise awareness of genocide.
