Suffrage in the City

As part of 2018 Heritage Open Weekends, Sadler's Yard will be transformed as we celebrate the contribution that co-operatives have made to equality.

Suffrage in the City is a joint event between the Co-operative Heritage Trust and the Co-operative College which will take place on Saturday 15 September. We're coming together to celebrate the hundredth year of Women being made eligible to vote under the Representation of the People Act of 1918.

We're proud to say that the Co-operative movement has always supported the development of rights and opportunities in the UK and around the world.

What's happening?

The Mikron Theatre Company will be giving a free performance of their live show ‘Revolting Women.’ It tells the Suffrage story through the eyes of a less well-known Pankhurst, Sylvia, who fought for the vote alongside working women in the East End after leaving the Manchester based WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union). After the performance you can visit PLANT, a unique workshop and design space, where you'll be able to view the collections of the National Co-operative Archive.

There'll be a whole host of unique items on display that relate to women’s organisations and their part in the story of the societies set up all over the country. They provided ordinary people with better food, homes and work and led the way for equality, with the women’s guild and campaign for equal pay particularly prominent.

You'll also be able to find out more about our work and see how we've helped transform the lives of women here in the UK and across the world in countries including Malawi, Sri Lanka and Rwanda.

How can I get involved?

This is a free event, so all you need to bring is yourself plus your friends and family! 

What time does the performance start?

The live performance will start at 13.00 and is expected to finish at approximately 13.45.

We are expecting the event to be extremely busy, and with limited seating available, are advising everyone to arrive from midday.

What's the easiest way to get there?

The event will take place in Sadlers Yard which can be accessed from Dantzic Street (Shudehill Tram stop) or from Corporation Street (Victoria Station and Tram stop). Both routes are also accessible for disabled visitors.

This is Manchester - what happens if it rains?

It is an outdoor performance with some covered seating provided on a first come first served basis. You are also welcome to bring portable furniture, such as foldable camping chairs, if you wish.
