Let's Talk About Race - Online Workshop

Join us and increase your confidence in talking about race, as well as gaining an enhanced awareness of how to reduce bias in your behaviour and how to manage a racially diverse team with greater empathy, understanding and skill.

This three hour online workshop explores historical and contemporary issues surrounding race in our society and examines what we can all do to encourage and improve conversations around race.

Learning objectives 

On completion of the workshop you will be able to:

• Explain how how black history has shaped today's society
• Describe what white privilege is and how it affects society
• Detail what we can do to change the privilege and power structures and how to be a white ally
• Identify why talking about race is difficult
• Have the skills to start conversations about race in your workplace
• Demonstrate top tips for starting conversation about race
• Have tangible actions on how to use your individual privilege to support others
• Manage an racially diverse team with greater empathy, understanding and skill

Section 1: How Black history has shaped today society

• A condensed history of black and ethnic minority people in the UK – including some information on the UK's role in enslavement and the British Empire
• A brief history of how and when Black people came to the UK and their experiences and rights
• The effect of Britain’s history on today’s inequality
• Why it’s important to understand Black British history
• Understand why current inequalities exist

Section 2: White privilege – what is it and how does it affect society?

• What is privilege?
• What is white privilege?
• How does white privilege affect white and non-white people?
• What can we do to change the privilege and power structures?
• How to be a white ally

Section 3: Let’s talk about race

• Understand why talking about race is difficult
• Why we need to talk about race and the impact of silence on Black, Asian and ethnic minority people
• Discuss what we can all do to encourage and improve conversations around race
• Language and saying the ‘wrong’ thing
• Have the skills to start conversations about race in your workplace
• Consider new products, services or output for your organisation that meet the needs of Black, Asian and ethnic minority customers and employees
• Have tangible actions on how to use your individual privilege to support others
• Top tips for starting conversation about race

Meet the tutor

Rosie Clarke is the Head of Inclusion and Diversity Services (North) at Inclusive Employers. After working in the arts and social care with vulnerable families, Rosie joined Inclusive Employers in 2015 where she delivers consultancy projects such as D&I strategy writing, action planning, policy reviews, steering group facilitation, advice and guidance sessions.

Rosie also delivers training across a range of diversity and inclusion topics for public and private sector companies including inclusive leadership, mental health awareness and unconscious bias.
