About John

Councillor John Blundell headshot

John was born and educated in the borough of Rochdale. He was first elected a councillor for the Smallbridge and Firgrove Ward in 2014 - age just 20 – and was re-elected in 2018. He was one of the youngest people to ever have been elected to Rochdale Borough Council.

In 2018 he became the council cabinet member for regeneration, business, skills and employment. A key part of his role is to ensure Rochdale’s Co-operative values and vision are implemented through visionary economic initiatives across the borough.

With ambitious council plans to regenerate Rochdale in place, John is playing a leading role leading on pioneering projects like the new Riverside shopping development, which forms part of a £400m investment in Rochdale town centre, and major improvements to the Grade 1 listed Rochdale Town Hall.

Other visionary ideas to drive investment into Rochdale are being considered and, through his cabinet portfolio, John is set to play a leading role in the future direction of the council and the borough.

A committed Co-operative member, John’s background as an economist means he is ideally suited to drive forward the regeneration, business and skills agenda.
