Who is it for?

Do you want your co-op to be more involved in the local community? This workshop will explore different ways in which organisations work with their local communities and what the word ‘community’ means.

What will participants learn?

In this workshop your team will explore different ways in which organisations work with their local communities and what the word ‘community’ means.

On completing the course they’ll be able to:

  • Recognise the diversity of the community served by your co-op
  • Define a range of terms, including ‘co-operative’, ‘social economy’, ‘voluntary sector’, ‘community group’ and ‘social enterprise’
  • Understand the importance of the 7th Co-operative Principle, ‘Concern for the Community’
  • Understand the benefits of strong relationships between co-ops and communities
  • Assess effective strategies for building better community links

How will participants learn?

During the workshop they’ll learn by taking part in:

  • Tutor-led discussions
  • Group activities
  • Studying case studies to identify best practice
  • Reflecting on their own experiences of building links in the community and sharing ideas with others
