The young people involved in our Co-operative (ad)Venture project seized the chance to give back to the local homeless community in Kirkcaldy earlier this month.

Making a difference

They hosted a drop-in centre offering hot food and drink, haircuts and hand massages, all for free thanks to the support of local businesses.

The event, held at The Kings Theatre, saw over 20 homeless people attend. As part on the drop-in centre they were also able to access further support from local services too. 

The initiative was the idea of all the young people who’ve taken part in the project that supports individuals aged 16-30 with learning difficulties, disabilities and autism into education, volunteering, training and employment. 

The project

The 11 week programme, delivered in partnership with ENABLE Scotland, encourages those involved to develop their skills and make a difference in their communities, giving them access to inspirational local businesses and presenting them with an ASDAN Award in enterprise upon successful completion. As part of the scheme they also meet new people, grow their confidence and above all else, have fun! 

Gemma Obeng, UK Programme Manager, The Co-operative College, commented, “The young people who have taken part in the project were clear that they wanted to do something to help the local homeless population in Kirkaldy. By giving back to their community, they’ve helped others and boosted their own skills in the process, proving that inspirational moments like this are possible when people work together. We’re incredibly proud of all the young people who’ve taken part in the scheme and look forward to welcoming a new cohort onto the project in Dunfermline in April.”

An ENABLE Scotland Spokesperson said, “The (ad)Venture Project is a wonderful partnership that brings together young people who have disabilities and supports them to develop their employability skills, create meaningful friendships and increase their attainment.

They decided to host the Kirkcaldy Kitchen as part of their project and all live live locally, identifying a need to create an inclusive space for those experiencing homelessness in Kirkcaldy and surrounding areas. After weeks of planning, the young people used their newfound employability skills to coordinate an event that brings together local businesses – offering food, haircuts and wellbeing activities. ENABLE Scotland are delighted to be working in partnership with The Co-operative College for another successful year – this partnership allows our young people the best opportunity to have specialist support and learn entrepreneurial skills.”
