The session

Social action artwork - wordcloud made up of words like injustice, human rights etc

This session will focus on the theme of social action and race, building on what's been learnt from previous weeks. This includes expanding on some of the brilliant ideas that came out of the Social Action Hackathon event held earlier this month with guest host Louis Howell.

Don't worry if you didn't get chance to join that session - come along and learn how to start and sustain social action for meaningful causes!

About the speakers

Omar Latif |

Technologist, Startup Founder and Part-Time Academic, Omar completed his first degree when he was still at high school in maths. Born and raised in Manchester, he has worked for Google in Silicon Valley and London but his experience has also seen him work in Miami, New York, Istanbul and Crewe!

He now runs a mental health tech startup that are creating tools and technology for mental health and wellness which is based on the 10 years worth of research he has personally carried out. Underneath the tech platforms they are building at WeAreASSIF is an advanced algorithm that uses tools such as voice recognition, neural networkings, facial recognition, natural language processing to track a user and look out for changes in behaviour. The idea is intervention before you know you need it and the long goal is that it will be able to predict patterns. As Omar loves having no time to himself he is also studying towards a PhD (part-time) at Oxford University in Artificial Intelligence (specifically the algorithm mentioned above).

Daniel Cox | Project Co-ordinator (Manchester)

As our Manchester project co-ordinator, Daniel joined us to deliver and develop our existing projects, as well as focusing on establishing new initiatives in and around our home city.

He comes from a background in mainstream education, alternative provisions and residential care and is passionate about helping to inspire, empower and uplift people in the community. Outside of work Daniel can be found in cinemas, restaurants, bookshops and, occasionally, in the gym.
