Fair and Square

Information for the concerned consumer.

Fair and Square addresses the growing demand for more and better information for consumers about ethical shopping issues.

The project brings information to concerned consumers through a programme of educational work within the co-operative movement. By providing opportunities for co-operative members to explore a range of ethical shopping issues, Fair and Square aims to help them be better informed in their individual consumer choices and in their participation in the democratic structures of co-operatives.

Some of the key themes Fair and Square has addressed include:

  • The future of Fairtrade.
  • Local, seasonal shopping.
  • Carbon emissions of food.
  • Organic production.
  • Labour Standards.

Fair and Square offers training courses, including an accredited training module (forthcoming) to members and customers of co-operatives, as well as those who make decisions about ethical sourcing and who shape business strategies and food policies.

The Fair and Square project is being run by the Co-operative College with funding from the Department for International Development.

Find out more by visiting the Fair and Square website which has a wealth of resources on a range of ethical shopping issues and ‘pick up and go’ activity kits for co-operative membership officers.
