Bursary support for co-operative learners
The Co-operative Pioneers Memorial Fund has awarded its first bursaries to PhD students from across the globe. Ten awards totalling £3,150 were made to support attendance at the Mainstreaming Co-operation – An alternative for the 21st Century? conference which was held in Manchester and for students carrying out research projects in Kenya and Tanzania.

The bursary has enabled a number of students to enhance their learning at the conference:
“The conference was a fantastic learning experience for me as it was both inspirational and informative. I would like to thank the generous nature with which I have been treated without the support I would not have been able to attend the conference. I am really grateful that I was afforded such an opportunity.” Christopher Hill
“The Mainstreaming Co-operation conference …was extremely useful to me as a researcher of co-operatives because it allowed me – for the first time – to interact with a great number of academics and individuals involved in researching the co‑operative movement.” Lee Collins
The Co-operative Pioneers Memorial Fund makes a small number of awards to individuals each year, to assist them with the costs of undertaking programmes run by the Co‑operative College. The Fund was established in early 2010, when a number of small grant funds were brought together. The Co-operative Pioneers Memorial Fund aims to:
‘Enable learners facing financial difficulties to participate in programmes arranged by the Co-operative College.’
Bursaries are available for programmes run by the Co-operative College, including events, courses, learning opportunities or consultancy support. Usually these programmes will be UK based, but Trustees will consider international programmes on a case by case basis. The Fund also supports adaptations to enable access to Co-operative College programmes for people with disabilities.
We know how useful early guidance can be to potential applicants – whether they decide eventually to complete a formal application, or to look elsewhere for funding. Initial enquiries should be addressed to our Funding Development Manager, Sue Hennessey on 0161 246 2909 or email sue@co-op.ac.uk
