Helping build a strong co-operative sector in KwaZulu-Natal

Staff from the Co-operative Learning and Development team recently attended a graduation ceremony in KwaZulu-Natal for students of the Co-operative College Certificate in Co-operative Development (International).
The ceremony, sponsored by The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, was the highlight of a twelve month programme delivered by the Co-operative College to a group of learners who will be the first (pioneers!) to take up positions as District Trainers, supporting the development of agricultural and producer co-operatives across the province.
The Coastlands Ridge Hotel in Musgrave provided an excellent venue, set against the panoramic view of Durban in the background. Janet Simms and Stephen Harris took their places on the podium following a two-day quality assurance visit, contributing to the speeches and congratulating the learners on their achievements. Speaking on behalf of the group, Dube Sibongiseni described how inspiring and enjoyable the programme had been and how much the graduates were looking forward to getting out in to the regions and working with their co-operatives.
Their programme included topics ranging from Co-operative Identity, Legislation, Regulatory Framework and Governance and Running a Successful Co-operative Enterprise to Working with New Adult Learners, Co-operatives Working with Their Communities and Running Training at Grass Roots Level.
The College is now developing a follow-up support programme for the first group of learners as they move away from their college based programme to working ‘in the field’. Work is also in progress on gaining external accreditation for the programme, which meets the requirements of the South African Qualifications Authority. Once this is in place it is anticipated that a second group of learners will be recruited to strengthen the team of District Trainers, helping to build a stronger co-operative sector in the province.
