New book: Capital and the Debt Trap: Learning from Cooperatives in the Global Crisis

Capital and the Debt Crisis coverCapital and the Debt Trap is an in-depth look at the ongoing global crisis that started in 2007, bringing up the fundamental issue of control and considering the opportunities created by debt and instability to look to new, alternative models.

Authors Claudia Sanchez Bajo and Bruno Roelants analyse how the crisis has operated within the framework of information technology and the internet and look at new, emerging forms of capitalism. The authors use four ‘real world’ case studies of how co-operatives have been able to generate wealth despite significant regional and global financial disruptions. In the 2008 financial crisis, co-operatives, especially co-operative banks, outperformed other types of organisations.

They argue that “what we need today is to apply equally sustainable and coherent management practices to our major economic activities so as to respond to the challenges of our time”, concepts familiar to co-operative organisations that embrace democratic governance and sustainable employment.
